Faces was released in May of 2014 as a mixtape. On the original street date, we wrapped a deli truck in Echo Park to hand out sandwiches with download codes on printed napkins, and created a fictitious clothing brand (evidence of both can be found on Rex Arrow’s music video for “Diablo”.) It was fun. In 2021, for the Faces official release, we worked on the album packaging, a 3D re-interpretation of the cover digital, an audiovisual mixtape, and various collateral. The release website contained a download link to keepsakes from when the album was recorded.
Samuel Jerome Mason was commissioned for the Colors & Shapes film—who then built the digital cover and helped direct the audiovisual mixtape with a series of artists including Mario Hugo, Danaé Gosset, and himself. RUFF MERCY joined the project to create a special video for San Francisco, using original footage from a 2014 single take of Malcolm performing the song. Sam Balaban directed and edited a short documentary to share the album’s story. We tried to make each moment worthy of the incredible body of work it was celebrating.
